Everything about longpapers

Where does the cigarette paper come from? Who was the first to roll? And what actually makes good long papers? Find answers to these and other questions in this article.

The origin of longpapers

Thanks, Columbus!

When Columbus discovered America, he did not miss the many people who rolled and smoked their tobacco in large tobacco leaves. Especially one of his crew members, Rodrigo de Jerez, still liked to smoke so much after his return to Spain that his neighbours got scared! They believed he was possessed by the devil: because of all the smoke he constantly blew from his mouth and nose. So a witch-exorcist put him in prison! But when the smoking spread quickly afterwards, Rodrigo de Jerez was released from prison.

Sevilla: the cigarette capital

Because the Spanish king issued a decree that all imported tobacco had to be shipped to Seville, the city became the world's leading place for cigarette production. In the beginning, the produced cigarettes were only puffed. But when beggars started to keep the smoke in their lungs for a long time in order not to waste tobacco, the rest of the population soon got a taste for this new way of inhaling.

The first rolling paper for handmade cigarettes

A small company in Alcoy, Spain, which actually produced unprinted wrapping paper, began producing cigarette paper for rolling your own cigarettes. RAW, one of the leading companies in the paper industry, still produces traditionally in Alcoy.

Longpapers were not invented yet - so cannabis consumers still had to settle for a pipe or bong. The thick cigarette paper was not suitable for hemp, because it burns too fast and thus the valuable THC is lost.

The paper thickness determines the burning speed. Therefore modern long papers are much thinner than conventional cigarette paper. In addition, Gum Arabicum is now used as an adhesive strip instead of the classic industrial adhesive used in the past.

Longpapers come onto the market for the first time

The length of cigarettes has changed over time: they have become longer and longer! One reason for this was the increase in tobacco tax. In addition, filters were used for the first time which shortened the cigarette. Thus, people demanded longer papers.

The original size of cigarette papers in Spain was 78mm in length and 44mm in width. If the filter used today is taken into account, the length is 84mm. This is still called the "Spanish size", 1¼ size or "Queen Size".

"Rizla" was the first company to call their 110mm long paper "King Size". This name has been kept until today and has become an umbrella term for all papers that are extra long and thin.

The most important paper producers at a glance

OCB - "Odet Cascadec Bolloré"

The name OCB is an abbreviation of three terms. The O stands for Odet, the river on which their first paper mill was founded in 1822. C for Cascadec, another of the company's founding sites, and B for Bolloré. This is the family name that has accompanied OCB for six generations now.

The thinnest joint paper ever

OCB has the finest rolling paper available in its range: the "OCB Ultimate" convinces with only 10 grams per square metre. OCB also offers pure, unbleached hemp paper, natural flax paper or unbleached wood cellulose paper. And not to be forgotten, of course, is the undisputed classic of the paper world: OCB Premium Slim, in the well-known black packaging with the holographic, silver glittering OCB print on it.

An (untrue) rumour is making the rounds: OCB and LePen are in cahoots

For some time there was a rumour that the French right-wing Front Nationale (FN) was helping the OCB company with Jean Marie LePen and became a shareholder in the company.

The reason for this was simply bad timing! OCB suffered a crisis in the mid-80s. When the company recovered shortly afterwards, the Front Nationale in France was also celebrating major political successes. After suspicion of cooperation was voiced on the radio in a youth programme and a Parisian hip-hop band set the rumour to music in a song, OCB's sales fell sharply.

In an interview, the head of the company expressed himself very openly on the subject. He admitted that he could well use financial support, but that he does not work with the LePen family and does not intend to do so. Advertisements that represent diversity soon followed. At the latest with the sale of OCB to the US company Republic Technologies in 2000, the rumour was to be put to rest.

Glass Papers - transparent long papers that cast a spell on you

The papers from Glass are transparent like glass - nothing makes your joint stand out more! Because they are made of 100% vegetable cellulose they are completely biodegradable and at the same time provide an incredibly pure taste. Due to their slightly sticky but non-slip surface they are very easy to roll and have no adhesive strip, because the material sticks together well everywhere!

Smoking - king size and endless papers in all variations

Smoking is one of the largest paper manufacturers in the world. Their papers vary between hemp, flax and rice and surprise with unusual designs and special editions like the Kukuxumuso Papers. They differ mainly in their paper thickness and material. The thinnest papers of this brand are the Smoking Deluxe Papers with 12.5 grams per square meter. They burn very slowly and are therefore perfect for hash joints or slow enjoyment.

Smoking Brown is also very popular: the classic among the unbleached papers! They are easy to roll and do not distort the taste of your herbs.
