A guide to baking and cooking with hemp.

You want to try something new, have already been through all joint variations and bongs and are looking for a different kick? Or you just don't like smoking? Then a baking session is just right for you! With little effort and without any basic knowledge, everyone can succeed in creating fine delicacies that are really something else!

The basis of every hemp dish is the hemp or cannabis butter. From tasty brownies to bread spreads or hearty main courses, nothing works without cannabutter. The whole plant can be used to make it: flowers, leaves, even the stems! Of course, buds and leaves are more suitable as they contain the most active ingredients.

Note whether your source material is highly potent cannabis with a THC content between 8-16% or whether it is weaker weed from outdoor production. For very potent strains the amount used should be reduced, for less potent strains the dosage should be increased accordingly. Basically one can say: for a slightly psychotropic effect you need 0,2-0,3mg THC per kilogram body weight. Of course this is only a guideline and not carved in stone: experienced psychonauts can tolerate more than newcomers!

You'll need the following equipment:

  • Cannabis
  • Butter or coconut oil
  • Water
  • Pot
  • fine-mesh sieve
  • Plastic container

First you have to grind your weed into small pieces. Either with a standard grinder, or, if you have more material, you can also use a coffee mill. The reason for this is that finer crushed grass has more surface. The active ingredients can be dissolved from the plant material much better.

Before you start, you should also heat your cannabis in the oven at 110 degrees for an hour: this process is called decarboxylation. During this procedure all the important active ingredients are activated and are then ready to bond with the butter.

The preparation of cannabutter

  1. Vegans can of course also use coconut oil instead of butter in the following. This is an excellent alternative, as it can absorb and bind active ingredients wonderfully due to its high fat content.
  2. Take your pot and fill it with water. As soon as the water is warm, add your butter. You can add the butter as a whole or cut it into pieces to make it melt faster. Make sure you always work with a small flame: your water-butter mix should only simmer gently.
  3. When the butter is completely melted, add your weed and let everything simmer softly. Very important: stir the mixture repeatedly! After about an hour a layer of oil should have formed on the surface. That' how you know: your butter is ready!
  4. Now take the pot off the stove and carefully pour the liquid through the tea strainer into the plastic container. You can still squeeze the leftovers to really get the most out of it. If any leaves remain in the butter, you can simply repeat the process or use a cheesecloth instead of your sieve.
  5. Now close the plastic container and put it in the fridge for a day. As soon as the butter is hard again, you can start processing it. Your butter can now be kept in the fridge for about 2 weeks, after which it can turn rancid. So eat it quickly! Alternatively, you can also store it in the freezer to make it last longer.
  6. Do not throw away the remaining flower residues, but use them for salad dressings or spreads!

The effect of cannabis butter

Please remember that cannabis, when taken orally, is only slowly absorbed by the body. This means that the kick will be delayed. The effect builds up gradually, but lasts longer and is much more intense than when smoking. It can take up to 45 minutes before you feel anything. Of course it also depends on whether you have an empty stomach or not.

The basic rule for Edibles with cannabis is: don't increase the dose immediately, but wait and see!

What to do if you feel unwell after consumption? Or you notice that a friend of yours is having a bad time? A lot of vitamin C is the best thing to do! Citrus juices are very good for you. A large glass of lemon water gets the circulation going again and the fog soon lifts. Warm milk with honey can also help. If you are particularly smart, prepare it before the session, then you are ready for anything!

And if nothing helps, they say: Take your mind off things, open the windows and let in some fresh air. Or take a short walk (and try not to talk to the neighbours). Oxygen and deep breathing can work wonders!
